MDIF provides affordable financing and business assistance to independent news outlets in challenging environments, helping them to become financially sustainable. We invest in outlets that provide the news, information and debate that people need to build free, thriving societies.
MDIF has published a detailed analysis of its impact on the financial sustainability of its investees since 2005. Some indicators included in the Media Development Impact Dashboard overlap with the IRIS defined metrics. However, confidentiality agreements mean that we are unable to share individual investee data and are thus unable to officially adopt IRIS metrics. We are constantly seeking to deepen our understanding of the effect of our work on investees' businesses and their impact on their societies. Our impact analysis informs both our work and that of our investees.
Other Impact Measurement Tools
MDIF invests in independent news media businesses, helping them to become financially sustainable so they can hold governments to account, expose corruption and provide a platform for debate. Several key metrics - such as audience reach and greater government accountability - are specific to us and not covered by general standards. We obtain this data by analysing client monitoring reports, Google Analytics and surveys.
