FIELD, an initiative of the Aspen Institute, seeks to identify, develop, and disseminate best practices, and to educate funders, policymakers, and others about microenterprise as an anti-poverty strategy. FIELD focuses on the U.S. microenterprise industry - exploring innovation, evaluating new ideas, helping to build the industry's infrastructure, disseminating best practices to practitioners, and serving as a resource to donors interested in microenterprise.

MicroTest, a FIELD initiative, is a management tool that empowers microenterprise practitioners to gauge and improve the performance of their programs and the outcomes of their clients. MicroTest provides proprietary data collection and reporting tools, as well as analysis and consulting services to MicroTest members.

MicroTracker data is housed within, a website that helps microenterprise programs, donors, and investors track the performance and client outcomes of microenterprise organizations nationwide. microTracker builds on FIELD’s 20-year history collecting data through the U.S. Microenterprise Census and MicroTest to allow for comparisons and benchmarks using standard measures across the U.S. microenterprise industry.

The mission of FIELD’s MicroTest/microTracker initiative is to improve the quality of microenterprise services and the stability of microenterprise organizations over time by promoting the use of common measures to regularly assess social performance. FIELD and IRIS work together to ensure alignment between the IRIS metrics and the MicroTest/microTracker measures.

MicroTracker also collects data from microenterprise programs across the country on these standard measures to assess performance across the U.S. microenterprise industry. FIELD shares these data with the IRIS initiative for use in cross-sector analyses of the impact investing industry.
